Birds in Motor City-Part 2

If you missed Part 1, click here.  Oh and if you wonder what the heck we were doing watching the St. Louis Cardinals in Detroit, click here.
Anyhow, after an afternoon dip in the hotel pool followed by a nap for the L-man, we were off to the game!

Our Family Photo at Comerica Park

We always try to get the Mickey photos for Logan.  He did not want to stand in front for a photo op though!
So one thing I have noticed after travelling to ten stadiums to watch the St. Louis Cardinals play is that Cardinal fans are like no others!  We have yet to be at another stadium that Cards fans were not in full force.  Our seat neighbors at this game even commented on the crazy amount of Cardinal fans at Comerica Park that night!  Here is an example of what I am talking about.

The Cardinals dugout before the game.  See all the Cardinal fans standing there?

The Tigers dugout before the game (these two pics were taken seconds apart!).  You can almost count the Tigers fans standing there on two hands!!
So as beautiful as the stadium was on the outside with all the awesome Tiger statues, the inside was just ok.  Nice, but nothing fabulous.  It did have some cool features though.

They just added this new massively huge scoreboard this season.  This baby is 88 feet by 144 feet!!

The Chevrolet fountain.  Instead of fireworks for homeruns and such like most stadiums do, they had water fountains that shot up out of the greenery when a homerun was hit.  It was pretty neat-o!
A little tidbit of information we learned while there was that the stadium is basically owned by the owner of Little Caesar's pizza.  That means you could get pizza at the ball park!  This was a score for Logan!

Logan and his "didda"
They did have a few neat kid friendly rides.

The Tiger Carousel!

"Which Tiger do you want to ride?"

Logan did not want to ride a Tiger, he preferred the bench?!?!

The Baseball Ferris Wheel.  Cool, huh?

Can you tell it was SOOOO hot?  I promise we were giving him plenty of fluids!!

A view of some more Tigers from the Ferris Wheel.
On our way back from the Ferris Wheel, Logan spotted the Tigers mascot.  Now, Logan loves mascots.  He is not biased to just Fred Bird.  He chased this poor Tiger around the stadium for about 15 minutes.  I'm pretty sure the Tiger thought Logan was stalking him!

Giving the Tiger a "5"

Logan and his token "cheese" face.  The Tiger girls (you know, the scantilly clad girls that follow the mascot around) were lovin' his little face!
Logan is at the age where baseball games are only so enjoyable for me.  I usually spend the game wandering around stadiums with him because he doesn't want to watch the game.  I had an awesome idea this time and it worked!!  I was able to sit and watch almost 6 full innings!!  My trick?...

The iPad!  Yep-I am not ashamed to admit I gave Logan the iPad to play with when he got restless!

Logan and I cheesing for the camera!

Logan took this awesome (snicker...snicker...) photo of Jeff and I
Sadly, the Cards lost the game.  But, Jeff and I did get to see Verlander pitch and OMG...wow...he was throwing 100 mph pitches in the 6th or 7th inning!!  Pretty sure, he played a huge role in the Cards loss...We did have a great time at the game though.  We love the Cards win or lose!

Nighttime shot of the scoreboard

The players in action.  We had awesome seats.  Notice how we are behind the safety net.  We always do this to avoid having to worry about fly balls hitting us on the head.  No kidding, though, at this game, there were 3 foul balls that came back and landed VERY close to use.   One was just a few rows down and a few seats over!  You better believe I was hovering over Logan praying the ball didn't knock me upside the head!!  Haha!
We still had one full day left in Detroit after the game.  I was nervous because we had no idea what the heck to do.  It ended up being a great day though, but you'll have to wait until Part 3 to find out what jewel of a place we found in Detroit!!

Birds in Motor City-Part 1

I would first like to let everyone know that my Mother-in-law just returned from Hawaii and my Mom and Dad just returned from The Dominican Republic.  Guess where Jeff, Logan, and I just got back from?  Any guesses?  Tahiti? Nope.  Australia? Nope.  Mexico?  Nope.  Detroit, Michigan? No-er-Yep...
That's right folks, while everyone else was basking in beach glory, our little family went to Motor City.  We went to add another MLB stadium to our list.   We have now entered double digits!  Watching the Cards play in Comerica Park last week was stadium number 10 for Jeff and I (It was only stadium #7 for Logan, although I was pregnant at 2 of the parks...so maybe it was number 9 for him?)
I'll let you all know that I was not at all excited about our trip to Detroit.  I mean, come on, other than going to the baseball game, what the heck were we going to do in Detroit?  I am going to tell you that we actually ended up having a REALLY good time.  There are A LOT of pictures to show just how much fun we had!!
We flew to Detroit because we knew Logan would love it!  He assured us for months that we would be flying in a "purple plane".  Even though we kept telling him this was probably not going to happen, he insisted.  Our plan was not purple, but the Southwest planes on the runway satisfied him.   I am thinking about getting my pilot license now.  Here's why:

Flying in the plane was instant lights out for Logan!  Both flights!   He was asleep before we even gained full altitude!

Logan travelled in style through the airports!  Let me tell you the little strap that holds the car seat to the carry on suitcase is one of the best $10 I have ever spent!

Our flight to Detroit was delayed by about an hour, so Logan and Jeff enjoyed a movie on the iPad while we were waiting!
Once we arrived in Detroit, we took a cab to our hotel.  We stayed at the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn which was a decent hotel.  It was right by the ballpark, but there wasn't much else nearby other than bars and casinos!  I have never been to a city that was so dead.  There wasn't traffic, there were hardly any people, hardly any homeless folk asking for money and such, and gorgeous buildings going to ruin!  It was so sad.  I am sure at one time Detroit was a wonderful city, but it is almost like a ghost city now!
We did find a Hard Rock near our hotel, so we enjoyed Hard Rock cocktails (virgin for Logan, of course!) our first night in Detroit followed by a swim in the hotel pool.

Cheers!
The next morning, we woke up to Logan showing us how he had peed all over his sheets in his tent (on accident).  He kept telling Jeff and I "I no like dis house" and pointing to his Peapod tent.  Since his sheets were soaked with urine, he didn't have to sleep in "dis house" anymore and was a lucky little man and slept in bed with Mommy and Daddy for the rest of our stay.
Anyhow, we decided to go check out the stadium that morning.  There were no tours offered on game days, so we were not able to get a stadium tour.  The outside of this stadium is AMAZING!  I have never seen so many Tigers!!

Tigers with baseballs in their mouth lined one entire side of the stadium!

"Ahhhhhh!!!"  Logan and I are about to get swiped by a huge Tiger!!

These Tiger statues were all over the top of the stadium. It was really neat!
Other than going to the ballpark, Jeff had seen a couple of hot dog places on the Travel Channel that he wanted to go try out.  It was a bit of a walk from our hotel, but we hoofed it in the 90 degree weather and arrived!
American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Hot Dog

They are right by each other!  We chose American Coney Island to try out with plans to return to try out Lafayette the next day.

Jeff wanted his picture in front of the hot dog places!

The hot dog!  Hot dog, chili, mustard, and onions.  Yummy!

Logan was a fan!

Jeff gave it the thumbs up too!
Ok, I was going to try to do this all in one post, but there is just way too many photos, so Part 2 will be coming soon with photos from our trip to Comerica Park to watch the Cards take on the Tigers!

The Rainbow Bridge

Another one of our family dogs has gone to Doggy Heaven this past week.  Velvet was the last of our puppies we raised from birth.  I thought I would share a short story I wrote (in high school) that won a few awards.  I'm actually shocked that I still have this essay in digital format.  I think it has made it through the years for a time like this.  Having a pet is a very hard thing.  You love a dog knowing he or she will most likely pass before you do.  Here's the story of four of our special dogs.  It tells the story of Maude and her puppies Velvet, Big Dog, and Scruffy (aka Devil Dog).  It is kind of a long essay, but well worth the read!

Velvet and Big Dog.  I would love to share photos when they were puppies, but I don't' have any digital shots

The Puppies

She showed up on my family’s doorstep one hot, humid day in August. My family had no idea where she had come from. She was the ugliest, dirtiest, saddest excuse for a dog I had ever seen. She was an old brown, black, and white beagle. Her fur was matted to her dwindling body. Her ribs protruded enough that one could get an accurate count of her ribs. Her eyes drooped like a child who is about to cry. I could tell from her sagging nipples that she had been a mother many times.

Mom swore up and down that my family would not take care of her and Dad reluctantly agreed. My father never could resist the temptation of caring for the dog and was soon sneaking scraps to Maude after dinner. Although Mom yelled repeatedly at Dad, she soon gave in to Dad’s pleas to keep the dog. The dog reminded my father of an old unmarried woman who would sit around in her rocker all day, not bothering anyone. Since she had these characteristics, my father named her Maude. She had quickly worked her way into my family’s hearts.

At the beginning of the school year my family noticed that Maude was gaining weight in her stomach area. She looked pregnant. We did not think it possible that she could be pregnant. She was too old. She was having trouble breathing, so my family figured that she had cancer or some other sickness. We decided maybe it was a tumor in her stomach.

Maude’s stomach kept getting larger. It could not have been a tumor because if the tumor was the size of her bulging stomach; she would have died already. I felt sorry for her. She looked pathetic. Her short, stubby legs were overwhelmed by the watermelon-sized stomach. By October, her stomach was so large she could not make it up steps. All she could do was lie in a bed prepared by my family. As the weeks of her pregnancy continued her health continued to become worse. Her breathing sounded like she was clearing her throat instead of taking a breath. My family hoped she would have her puppies soon. If her puppies were not born soon, the chance of Maude surviving labor would be slim.

On Halloween I went to the movies with some friends and arrived home around midnight. I walked to Maude’s bed to see how she was doing and she growled at me. She would not allow me come anywhere near her. I found this odd because she would never turn away a hand ready to pet her. Wondering if something had happened to her, I ran to our porch and looked over the edge. It was dark in the garage, but a dusk to dawn light gave the garage a small glow of light and I noticed several small shapes in the box with her. It was Maude’s puppies! I tried to count the puppies, but Maude would not let me close enough to count.

The next morning I went out to the garage to count the puppies. I counted seven puppies. One was hard to see because it was wedged between Maude’s backside and the box. It was obvious from the size of the puppy that it was the runt. Its fur was jet black. It lay there not even trying to nurse. The other puppies squirmed around Maude’s stomach fighting for a nipple. I carefully picked the runt up and moved it toward a nipple but it still would not start nursing. I knew that it would die if it did not start nursing.
The runt was the first puppy to die. She died two days after the birth. The rest of the puppies were getting weaker. Maude was also. In the first four days of the puppies lives, my family had lost two other puppies. Maude was left with only four puppies to nurse, but her health was still fading. My dad asked the vet what we should do to help Maude. She said we needed to start bottle feeding the puppies. This would make nursing easier on Maude because she was too old to produce enough milk to feed four puppies. We began bottle feeding the puppies. It was too late. The puppies had already drained the life out of Maude. She died six days after giving birth to her litter.

After Maude’s death, my house broke into chaos. My family had to feed the remaining puppies four times during the day. It usually took forty-five minutes to feed them. These puppies were the fighters of the litter. They had taken many hits and were still surviving, but two days after Maude died, one of the surviving puppies passed away. My family was left with three puppies to care for. We named them Velvet, Big Dog, and Devil Dog.

Velvet was the littlest of the three. Her fur was jet black except for a white spot on the tip of her tail. She was the puppy who showed me who the father of the puppies was. She looked exactly like our next door neighbor’s Labrador. She is the miniature image of him down to the white-tipped tail. She fit in the palm of your hand and loved to be cuddled. She was my favorite puppy. She looked so innocent with her eyes sealed shut. She would search for the bottle nipple and shriek until her mouth found the nipple.

Big Dog was the biggest of the three puppies. He was frisky. My house was a jungle to him. He was the explorer who wanted to see all of the sights as quickly as possible. It was funny how he would run into a chair or some other object in the room and then would be stunned for just a second until he decided to continue his explorations. There were many times I had to stop him from falling off a table or bed. His fur markings were hilarious. He had black cow-like spots on his white fur. One spot on his back looks remarkably like Mickey Mouse’s head.

Devil Dog was the ornery puppy. We had to feed her out of the syringe long after the other puppies started using the bottle. She refused to suck out of the bottle. She would suck out of the syringe though. Her white hair was so thin, the pink of her skin showed. She looked like a rat. Her name, Devil Dog, was ridiculed by many people. Eventually my family decided to change her name to Scruffy.

The puppies are now two and a half months old. They have each developed their own personalities. Although Velvet was originally the sweetest puppy, she is now extremely ornery. She loves to dash away from me when I go to pick her up. Her black fur is speckled with brown spots now, but her white tipped tail still remains. Big Dog has changed the least of the three puppies. He is still the jungle explorer, though. Scruffy is my favorite puppy now because she loves to play but will cuddle also. She is the most obedient of the three.

Having the puppies in our house has changed the way I look at motherhood. Many times they would keep me up late at night and wake me early in the morning. I am constantly changing the newspapers in their pin. I am also having to train them to go to the bathroom outside. It is hard for me to punish them, but I know it must be done or they will never learn. I have gained experience from taking care of these puppies that will help me when I become a mother. I have also realized that I am not ready to have my own child. When I am tempted by a better activity than puppy care, I will push my puppy responsibilities toward another family member. When I have my own child, I will not be able to give my responsibilities to another person. I have gained a great deal of insight in only two and a half months and am excited to know I will learn more in the future months with my puppies.

Velvet will be missed, but she has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is now healthy and happy and reunited with Jake, Maude, Big Dog, and Scruffy!

What Little Boys Love!

Logan had a great birthday party!  He got LOTS of new toys and we have opened most of them and tried them all out.  He's been in heaven!  His grandparents really hit the mark this year with a baseball tee from Grandma and Pappy and a bounce house from Nonna and Papa.

You'd be surprised the hand eye coordination Logan has?!?!

I got in the bounce house for a few seconds.  Even though, Logan and I were nowhere near the weight limit, I felt like I was gonna pop it!

One happy boy

Air Time
Logan's party was not on his actual birthday so we did a little birthday cake time for him on his actual birthday with the leftover cupcakes from the party!
This is the cutest 3 year old I know!!

He is really good at blowing out the candles!
Our house looks like a toy store right now and Logan has been enjoying everything.  We are so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends to celebrate his life with!!

Logan's Dino-rific 3rd Birthday Party!

Boy, oh, boy!  Did we have some fun with Logan's birthday this year!  Last year was fun, but this year was awesome!  He was really into his birthday this year.  We prepared for his birthday by singing "Happy Birthday To Me" over and over and over and over...followed by blowing out of pretend candles.
He picked the theme several months ago.  Dinosaurs.  Of course.
With my handy dandy new Silhouette machine and help from Pinterest, I made a good portion of Logan's party decorations and favor boxes.  I had one small hang up when the blade broke and I had to overnight a new blade so that I could get everything ready.  I'm pretty sure Jeff thinks I was a little crazy about the party, but Logan and his guests all had a good time and loved it!
I was pretty busy with things during the party, but between my Dad and I, we got a few pictures!  (Ok, a lot of pictures!  Bear with me.  This isn't even a quarter of the pictures my Dad took.)

The Happy Birthday Banner and the cake table (before the cake arrived)

I got this idea from Pinterest but modified it a bit by using our Wedding vase, dinosaurs, and glass beads!

Favor boxes and Dinosaur party hats!  I cut each and everyone of these on my cool machine!

I made fun little signs for all of the foods.  I found the name ideas on the Internet for the most part, but I did come up with the "Tea Rex He's not Sweet" for the unsweetened tea!

Besides Brontosaurus burgers and Dino dogs, we also had Raptor salad (pasta salad), Dino bones (pretzel sticks), Dino Toenails (bugles), Fossil Fries (potato chips), and an Herbivore Section (veggie and fruit tray).
The cake turned out amazing!  Thank you Something Sweet!!

Logan and his Pappy getting ready to party!

Jacklyn was not too happy about Jeff holding her!

Cortland had a lot of fun!

I think Great Grandma Jenny's face is priceless in this photo!  Logan was attacking Lillie with his new dinosaur!

Here's a fairly decent shot of the birthday shirt I made for Logan!

I'm not sure how Veronica got the dino hat on Logan's head, but I was glad to get a picture!

Don't you just want to kiss those cheeks!?!

Baby Jacklyn was extremely popular!

There was a lot of pass the baby going on!

Yes, Logan is dipping his carrot directly into the dip container...and yes those are awesome dinosaur socks he has on!  My mom sewed them for him!

The bubble machine was a huge hit with the kids!

"Pop"

Priceless!

Logan and Addy always in constant motion!

Logan sampled the icing before we lit the candles!

Logan was so cute when everyone was singing "Happy Birthday".  He cheesed like this almost the whole time!

All that practice paid off

"Yummy!"

Lillie kept licking her icing off and coming back for more!

I'm pretty sure the kids were super happy with the party!

Opening his new bounce house from Nonna and Papa

Logan had lots of help opening presents

Don't worry, Logan did not hit Lillie with his new baseball bat!  He was just practicing his hitting stance.

Our little dinosaurs!

"Hooray!"

This was one VERY happy Birthday Boy!
